Time to catch our breath!
January is that miserable time of year when we bemoan the grey skies, cold weather and suffering bank balances. For us musicians however, it’s a time to catch our breath, take stock, do the dreaded tax return and some much needed practice after a busy season of Christmas concerts and new year’s gigs. So what did I most enjoy in 2014?
Most glam venue: The Dorchester Hotel
The best Christmas decorations I’ve ever seen, nevermind the surroundings.
Friendliest venue staff: The Luton Hoo
They offered me champagne before I’d started playing!
Prettiest wedding: Manor of Groves
Doves, ribbons and a pagoda.
Most random moment: Playing for a surprise romantic dinner at Vesuvius Italian restaurant in Maidstone. The other diners enjoyed with confusion! … Or maybe it was a customer dancing and singing along to my playing at a Boots Pharmacy re-launch, right in the middle of the shop floor!?
Funniest moment: A toss up between playing Mission impossible as a page boy walked down the aisle, and a congregation getting up and leaving during the signing of the register to be ushered back in a panic for the registrar to announce the newly married couple. (Apparently some Asian weddings don’t bother watching the official signings!)
Worst moment: Being asked to pay £4.50 for a cup of tea at the stingiest venue ever!
Most moving moment: Playing violin duo at my first same sex marriage.
And what am I looking forward to in 2015? More of the same please! I love the opportunity to see so many different places, take a sneak peek into people’s special occasions (weddings, anniversaries, proposals, launch parties, functions – you name it!) and to add something special to an event with a bit of violin magic.
